Maintenance Guidelines

This document offers guidance for maintaining the Petersburg Forest and Waterloo Landfill Site trails (collectively know as Hydrocut Trails) within the Region of Waterloo. The Hydrocut Trails have been recognized as the preferred cross-country mountain bike location in and beyond the Region of Waterloo. The intention of these guidelines is to maintain a first class cross-country cycling location with minimal environmental impact. The trail system is cross-country mountain-biking specific, but can be shared with hikers and runners. The trails are not intended for equestrian users or motorized vehicles of any type. Motorized vehicles are prohibited (by law) to be on the trails or anywhere else in the ESPA. Trail characteristics and features that do not meet the guidelines will not be created or tolerated in this trail system.




• No trail maintenance, trail re-routing, or any kind of trail work shall be done without the guidance and permission of the Trail Committee of the Waterloo Cycling Club. All unauthorized trails, trail changes, and shortcuts will be immediately reversed and blocked off with natural obstructions. The trail design and maintenance philosophy is primarily guided by the landowners/managers wishes and the IMBA’s standards

• The trail designs are balanced with the desire to protect the natural environment and minimize impact on the ecosystem of the forest

• Since the use of motorized vehicles and horseback riding is not allowed, the trail layout strives to aid the discouraging of those activities

• To further discourage motorized vehicle traffic, wherever possible fallen tree trunks are left in place as obstacles, tight and difficult spots are sought after without offering easier passage alternatives

• No manmade features are allowed except when wooden structures like boardwalks or low bridges are needed for crossing water and controlling erosion in the wet areas (wood that comes into direct contact with water must be inert to avoid water quality impacts associated with chemical leaching from treated wood)

• Any areas that might start to show signs of deterioration like erosion or trail widening will be promptly eliminated by: trail re-routing, narrowing down with obstructions, or repairs with stone armoring

• Wherever possible, one-way traffic direction is assigned in order to ease the high volume cycling traffic flow, while the hikers and runners are encouraged to travel the opposite way for easier spotting of the approaching cyclists

• High value is placed on achieving smooth trail flow and easy connectivity through carefully planned intersections that minimize confusion and allow a variety of distance choices
